No eviction drive in Burrabazar & College Street, clarifies KMC Commissioner
A late-night shooting in Kolkata’s Baghajatin area has taken a new turn, with police linking the murder of a Trinamool Congress worker to a gambling dispute. Rahul Dey was shot dead on a rooftop in Purba Phoolbagan after being called to a friend’s flat, while another youth, Jeet Mukherjee, sustained serious injuries. The incident, which occurred around midnight, triggered panic in the locality amid the ongoing election atmosphere.
Police have arrested four accused in connection with the case and identified them as Deep Roy alias Pukai, Bidhan Bandyopadhyay, Raja Banik, and Jayanta Ghosh. Preliminary findings suggest that all four were known to the injured Jeet Mukherjee and were his regular gambling associates. Investigators believe the violence was triggered by a dispute over gambling money.
According to the probe, a gambling session along with heavy drinking was underway on the rooftop of Jeet’s flat on Wednesday night. Rahul Dey had been called there despite reportedly not being in regular contact with Jeet for some time. During the gathering, the accused allegedly arrived at the spot and opened indiscriminate fire, killing Rahul on the spot and leaving Jeet critically injured.
Police are now examining multiple angles to uncover the exact sequence of events and motive behind the attack. CCTV footage from the area is being analysed, local residents are being questioned, and Jeet Mukherjee’s family members have also been interrogated. Officials are also looking into previous complaints linked to gambling activities in the area as the investigation continues.
